How to Make Mulled Cider Mix
Mulled cider is a Christmas treat, and this easy mix makes it simple for anyone to enjoy. Package bundles of Mulled Cider Mix in a decorative airtight tin or canning jar and attach a preparation label before giving it to family and friends.
Mulled Cider Mix
Special equipment: Cheesecloth, butcher’s twine
Preparation time: 30 minutes
Cooking time: 1-1/2 minutes
Yield: 6 bundles
2 large oranges
6 cinnamon sticks (3-1/2 inches each), each broken into about 3 equal-size pieces
6 teaspoons chopped crystallized ginger
24 whole cloves
36 whole allspice berries
Cut six 7-x-7-inch double-thick squares of cheesecloth. Lay out all six.
Peel the zest off the oranges in fairly even strips. (Eat the oranges or save them for another purpose.) Microwave on high for about 1-1/2 minutes, until dried. Check often to turn or to remove smaller pieces when dried. Break into pieces about 1/2 inch long. Divide evenly among the cheesecloth squares, a scant tablespoon in each one.
Place 3 pieces of cinnamon stick on each cheesecloth square. Put l teaspoon ginger, 4 cloves, and 6 allspice berries on each square.
Gather up the cheesecloth squares into a bundle and tie tightly with string so that no ingredients fall out. Trim off the excess cheesecloth above the string.
Prepare a label with the following information, and include it in your gift:
Mulled Cider: Mix one packet Mulled Cider Mix with 16 ounces of apple cider in a small saucepan. Simmer on low for 5 minutes. (Yields two 8-ounce servings.)
