Import Photoshop or Illustrator Files into Flash CS5 Catalyst

By Jennifer Smith, Christopher Smith, Fred Gerantabee

Flash Catalyst allows you to import Adobe Flash Creative Suite 5 files in Photoshop or Illustrator format. When importing from Photoshop, for example, all the layers import intact. The layers of the Photoshop file are in the Layers panel.

You can use Catalyst without importing any file, but its real power for a web designer lies in its ability to add interactivity to Photoshop or Illustrator files.

To import your file, follow these steps:

  1. Do one of the following:

  • Open Catalyst. In the Welcome Screen under Create New Project from Design File, choose either From Adobe Illustrator AI File or From Adobe Photoshop PSD File.

  • From within Catalyst, choose File→New Project from Design Comp, choose an Adobe Photoshop (psd) or Adobe Illustrator (ai) file, and then click Open.

  1. Browse to find your PSD or AI file, select it, and click Open.

The Photoshop (or Illustrator) Import Options dialog box appears.

  2. To select specific layers to import, click the Advanced button, specify the layers that you want, and then click OK.

You may have some layers that you created for temporary use that you don’t want to end up in the final web site file.

  3. (Optional) Choose a background color for the Artboard.

You might have already assigned a background color in your design file.

  4. (Optional) In the Fidelity Options section, change how you import layers by choosing from the Image Layers, Shape Layers, or Text Layers drop-down lists.

You can’t edit flattened content, such as text. By default, shape layers are flattened so that you can more easily work with them in Catalyst.

  5. Be sure that the Import Non-Visible Layers check box is selected.

That way, even if some of your layers are hidden, you import them anyway.

  6. Click OK.

A progress bar might appear while Catalyst imports your file.

  7. If you see a message telling you that the file contains a large number of bitmap graphics and/or vector paths (with instructions for optimizing the graphics), click Continue.

  8. If the Import Issues dialog box appears with messages, such as a list of empty layers that weren’t imported or missing fonts, click OK.

If you’re missing fonts, you may need to install them or use different fonts in the imported file.

Behind the dialog box, your Photoshop file or Illustrator file appears in a Catalyst window.
