How to Browse the Web with NaturallySpeaking 12

By Stephanie Diamond

Using NaturallySpeaking with Internet Explorer (IE 7, 8, or 9) or Mozilla Firefox (Firefox 8 and higher) lets you do your entire web browsing by voice, efficiently, without having to touch a mouse or keyboard. Do whatever is most comfortable for you. Be aware that you must choose either IE or Firefox when you use NaturallySpeaking, even if you regularly use some other browser.

For use with Dragon NaturallySpeaking 12, an extension is available, called Rich Internet Application (RIA) extension. This extension enables the following browsers to have more complete web application support. They are:

  • Internet Explorer version 9 (32-bit only)

  • Mozilla Firefox, version 12 or higher

  • Google Chrome, version 16 or higher

You will know if the extension is enabled in that version of the browser by opening it and looking to see if there is a green check mark next to some of the commands. You may be prompted to load it, so click yes when you’re prompted.

To start browsing the web, follow these steps:

  1. Start NaturallySpeaking.

  2. Start Internet Explorer (or Firefox, alternatively).

It doesn’t matter how you start Internet Explorer. You can start it with the “Start” command by saying, “Start Internet Explorer,” by selecting a Favorite from the Start menu (not in Windows 8), or by clicking its desktop icon with the mouse.

That’s all there is to it. Your browser opens and is immediately ready to take your commands.
