Working with Salesforce Remotely and Offline

By Jon Paz, T. J. Kelley

Salesforce.com planned offers a way for you to update a subset of your records while you’re offline. Maybe you’re on the plane with a weak Internet connection. Maybe you’re on a remote island on vacation. Either way, you don’t always have an Internet connection.

Force.com Connect Offline is a downloadable client application that looks like the online version and allows users to create, read, edit, and delete from your briefcase, or a subset of available records. You can work anywhere, at any time, with literally no strings attached.

The first step is to install the application on your local hard drive. To do this, choose Your Name→My Settings→Desktop Add‐Ons→Force.com Connect Offline and click the Install Now button. Make sure your administrator creates one or more offline briefcase configurations to hold the data available offline. When this is done, update the briefcase before running Connect Offline for the first time.

If you don’t see an offline option in your Setup menu, you may be using Professional Edition. Force.com Connect Offline is only available for free on Enterprise, Performance, Unlimited, and Developer Editions, but you may still purchase it for an additional cost on the Professional Edition.
