Join Amazon Associates to Sell through Social Media

By Marsha Collier

Amazon is a very popular and social place, which you can take advantage of as a business owner. If you already shop at Amazon, you can also use the website for your business to sell products.

As you can see by the Associates hub page in the figure, Amazon sells almost any conceivable item of merchandise. If you don’t shop at Amazon, you’ll have to open an account.

To become an Amazon associate, do the following:

  1. Go to Amazon’s home page and click the Become an Affiliate link at the bottom of the page.

The Amazon Associates hub screen appears.

If you’re a resident of Arkansas, Colorado, Illinois, North Carolina, Rhode Island, or Connecticut, you are ineligible to join the Associates Program due to current state sales tax laws. This may change, but for now you are out of luck as far as an affiliate account.

  2. Click the Join Now for Free button.

  3. Fill in the required forms.

Be sure to read the Terms of Service. Payments are made by direct deposit to your bank, or you can opt to receive payment by Amazon gift cards (which can be convenient if you’re a regular Amazon shopper).

While filling out the forms, you are required to give Amazon a link to your website. Upon examining your application, Amazon visits your website to approve your content before they permit you to become an associate. Amazon’s site requirements are in the Program Operating Agreement. Their rules are pretty fair, so you should have no problem being approved.

Assuming your site passes muster, you’ll get an e-mail confirmation from Amazon.

Now that you’re an associate, you are eligible to make varying percentages (advertising fees) on sales. Figuring out your percentage is a bit challenging, because Amazon rates (just like your mileage) will vary. The payout is based on the number and category of products that are shipped, streamed, or downloaded in a month.

As a member, you have access to the Associates hub page, from where you can manage your account.
