How to Change Buddy Icons in Flickr Sets

By Janine Warner, David LaFontaine

Unlike many other social media sites, the buddy icon, which acts as your Flickr profile image, changes when you select a specific set of images within that Flickr profile. This is very similar to the cover photo on a Pinterest board. The image that’s selected as the main image in each set takes the place of the buddy icon when that set is selected.

The set named California Nature Photos is selected, and a photo of an egret is displayed as the buddy icon because it was chosen for that set.

To create a set, go to your Flickr account and follow these steps:

  1. Select Sets from the horizontal navigation bar.

  2. Click the Create Your First Set Now button.

  3. Drag images from your Flickr content from the photostream at the bottom and drop them into the set.

To remove content, drag it back to your photostream below the set.

  4. Name your set in the left sidebar and (optional) add a description.

  5. Click Save.

To specify the buddy icon for each set, select the set and then click the Edit button at the top of the window area. Then click and drag the image you want into the thumbnail space at the left of the window.

You have to get the image exactly over the thumbnail area to change the icon.

After you see your selected image replace the existing icon image, click Save. The icon is changed.

A set’s buddy icon is also used as the main photo displayed for the set when all sets are viewed together.
