How to Add a Header Image to the Top of Your Twitter Profile

By Janine Warner, David LaFontaine

In addition to a profile image, you can include a larger image at the top of your profile. Twitter calls the larger image the “header image.” Twitter recommends that you use an image in the header that’s 1252 x 626 px.

Adding a header image is even more important than including a background image because the header image is displayed more frequently than the background image.

The background image of your Twitter page is visible only when your profile is viewed on a desktop or laptop computer. You see how Adobe Evangelist Paul Trani’s (@paultrani) profile appears when displayed on an iPad. Note that his background image isn’t visible, but the profile photo and header image are both displayed. The header and profile image are also displayed on smartphones, such as an iPhone.

Choosing a great header image

You can use virtually any image in your header as long as it’s not obscene and doesn’t violate Twitter guidelines.

However, not all images work well in the header area of a Twitter profile. The best header images have these characteristics:

  • The bottom of the image area is dark enough that the white text used to display your title and description is easily readable.

  • The center area of the photo isn’t too busy, leaving space for the profile photo to display without covering a key part of the header image or looking crowded.

The header photo helps tell your story by conveying information about your personal or professional interests or talents.

Follow these instructions to upload a header image to your Twitter profile page:

  1. Go to your Twitter profile page (http://twitter.com/yourusername).

  2. Click the Edit Profile button at the bottom of the header image area.

Small icons that look like little pencils appear in the top-right corner of the profile image and the header photo.

  4. From the drop-down menu, choose Upload Photo.

The Select File dialog box opens.

For best results, Twitter recommends you use an image that’s 1252 x 626 px.

  5. Select any image from where it’s stored and choose Open.

Alternatively, just drag an image into the header photo area of the browser window to upload it to Twitter.

The selected image opens in the header area of your Twitter profile, replacing the previous image.

  6. Click and drag the slider at the bottom of the header image to size and position the photo as necessary.

If you sized the image to 1252 x 626 px, it will fit the space perfectly.

  7. Click the Apply button and then click Save Changes.

The slider closes, and the image is automatically inserted into the header space in your Twitter profile page and made visible to your followers.
