How to Create a Group Pinterest Board for Visual Social Marketing

Pinterest lets you create group boards, which can be a particularly useful tool for visual social marketing. Both public and private boards can be shared. A group board is a board that multiple people can pin to — you and other people whom you invite. Creating and participating in group boards on Pinterest is a helpful way to increase your exposure, reach new audiences, and interact with new people.

Group boards on Pinterest are identifiable by an icon of multiple people displayed beside the name of the board. If you contribute to a group board that’s public, it’s displayed on your profile page along with the boards you create. When someone is viewing a group board, the contributors of the board are displayed in the upper-left corner of the board page.

To contribute to a group board, you must be invited by the creator. If you’re invited to join a group board, you receive an invitation in your notifications. You may choose to accept a group board invitation by clicking the red Accept button.


You can also create a group board and invite other Pinterest users to contribute to your board. Follow these steps:

  1. Create the board.

    1. Click the plus button in the upper-right corner of the screen.

      Alternatively, if you’re already on the Boards page of your profile, you can click the big button labeled + Create Boards (with the plus sign) on the right side.

    2. Click on Create a Board from the drop-down list.

    3. Add the information for your board.

      Name: The only required field for the board. In the Name field, enter the name that describes your board.

      Description: A text field, limited to 500 characters, that describes the board. Describe what the board is about and why someone may be interested in following it.

      Category: Possible categories that most closely fit your board’s content. Adding a category to your board makes it easier to be found in searches on Pinterest.

      Add a Map: Selecting Yes creates a place board. A place pin has a specific location connected to it. A place board highlights all place pins on a map.

      Secret: Visible only to you and people you choose to invite to your board. A secret board doesn’t show up anywhere else on Pinterest. Your secret boards can be viewed at the bottom of your profile. (Again, only you can see them.) You can now create only three secret boards.

      You can make a secret board public, but you can’t make a public board secret. Select Yes to make a board secret or No to make it public.

    4. Click Create Board.

      Clicking this button creates your board and adds it to your profile.

  2. Click the Edit button to edit the board.

    From your profile, click the Edit button on the board to which you want to add contributors.

  3. Type a name or e-mail to indicate who can pin.

    At the bottom of the Edit Board screen is an input box named Who Can Pin. As you begin to type the e-mail or username of the user you want you add, the person’s profile appears in a drop-down list below the input box, and you can choose the user you want to invite.


You can also remove contributors by following Steps 1 and 2 in the preceding step list. However, when you reach Step 3, you see the current contributors below the Who Can Pin input box. Beside each username, the Remove button appears. Click Remove to remove a user from your group board.
