Successful Mom Blogger Shellie Goyal - dummies

Successful Mom Blogger Shellie Goyal

By Wendy Piersall, Heather B. Armstrong

Shellie Goyal and her mother started publishing online all the way back in 1999 when they started, a craft project website. The site grew to the point of providing a small-but-stable income; encouraged by their success, they decided to start the CraftGossip blog network at the beginning of 2007.

CraftGossip now has 19 blogs on different craft and DIY project topics, and is maintained by 19 blog editors. It’s now one of the most widely read craft blogs — and one of only a handful of blog networks started and owned by moms.

CraftGossip earns enough income to pay all 19 of their editors a percentage (in the editor’s favor) of the advertising revenue each blog earns. The old site is so well established that it continually out-earns the newer blog network, even though its founders have less time to dedicate to updating its content.

They also have a mailing list with over 100,000 newsletter subscribers. This newsletter serves to send traffic continually to their site, plus it’s another way to sell advertising space.

Shellie’s three tips for blogging success are:

  • Write about something that you are passionate about, but it doesn’t have to be something that you know a lot about. For example, Julie Powell from Julie & Julia wrote about her attempts at completing Julia Child’s French Cooking book — and in spite of all her mishaps, she kept at it. She was passionate about what she was doing, even though she didn’t know much at all about cooking.

  • Get a decent design. Before visitors even read a word of your blog, they will judge it by how it looks. It doesn’t have to be expensive; there are a lot of free themes available, or you can hire someone to create a design for very little money. Try crowd-sourced design services such as 99designs.

  • Give something away for free. A giveaway is a great way to get people to your blog, and you will find a lot of these people will stick. You don’t have to spend an arm and a leg.
