Land a Book Deal Based on Your Mom Blog

Blogging is one of the best ways to get a book deal and is also the very best way to prepare for writing a book as well. Both blog-writing and book-writing take an incredible amount of work and discipline, probably more than you might imagine.

At the BlogHer conference in 2007, Gina Trapani spoke about writing her LifeHacker book that had just been published. For those who imagined that writing a book was a pretty glamorous deal that earned writers quite a bit of money, Gina gave her session participants a dose of reality:

  • You don’t write a book for the money; you write it to build your platform. Gina made it clear that books are much more frequently used as a means to an end — to get clients, jobs, or publicity.

  • You may or may not get a book advance. If you get an advance, it’s only against book sales. That means you have to sell a lot of copies to earn anything on top of your advance.

  • A publisher won’t really market your book for you. It’s pretty much up to the book author to do all the marketing and promotion for the book. You may get a little bit of help and guidance from your publisher, but sales fall on your shoulders.

  • Writing a book is way different from writing a blog. Writing a long-form book is far different from writing short-form blog posts. It also takes discipline above and beyond what it takes to write for a blog.

  • Writing a book is a full-time job. She was so right. Writing a book while you continue working on your business full time is like working two full-time jobs for several months in a row!
