How to Find Photos with Creative Common Licenses on Flickr

To use other people’s images in your mom blog posts, you need to ensure the images are not copyrighted. Creative Commons helps copyright owners protect their work.

Here’s how to find photos with Creative Common licenses on Flickr:

  1. Go to

    If you have a Flickr account, sign in. If you don’t have a Flickr account, you can still search for photos.

  2. Enter a keyword into the Search field at the top-right of the page and click the Search link.

    A page appears with thumbnails of photos that match your keyword.

  3. On the search results page, click the Advanced Search link next to the search field.

    The Advanced Search page appears.

  4. Scroll down and select the Only Search within Creative Commons-Licensed Content and the Find Content to Use Commercially check boxes.

    You only need to select the Find Content to Modify, Adapt, or Build Upon check box if you plan on altering a photo from its original appearance.

  5. Click the Search button again to show only commercially available images to use.

    Your search results appear as image thumbnails.

  6. Click a thumbnail to view a larger version of the image.

    While using Flickr, be sure to follow its terms of service that require you to link back to the photo you use on the Flickr site. This is easily accomplished by simply using Flickr’s own HTML code.

  7. Above your chosen image, click the More Ways to Share drop-down list beside the share buttons.

  8. Click the Grab the HTML/BBCode link.

    More options appear on the drop-down list.


  9. Select your preferred image size from the drop-down list.

    This drop-down list will only appear if the image owner has multiple sizes available.

  10. Select the HTML radio button.

    The BBCode is only used for forums.

  11. Select the HTML code (you may need to scroll to select it all), copy it, and paste it into your blog post where you want the image to appear.
