Using Categories & Recents in Your iPad Maps App

By Edward C. Baig, Bob LeVitus

Maps is an extremely handy native app that comes on your iPad. It will help you find directions, whether you walk, drive, or take public transit. It can even send your location to a friend to help them find you. In true Apple fashion, Maps goes above and beyond the call of duty. Check out what you can do with Categories & Recents.

When you tap inside the search field, eight category buttons — Food, Drinks, Shopping, Travel, Services, Fun, Health, and Transport — appear below the search field. Tap one to find nearby attractions of that type.

Maps automatically remembers locations you’ve searched for and directions you’ve viewed in its recents list, which appears below the category buttons. To see a recent item on the map, tap the item’s name.

To clear a recent item, swipe it from right to left and then tap the Remove button that appears.

You can no longer clear the entire list. In iOS 10, you can clear only individual items from the list, one at a time.
