Playing Music with Your iOS Device: iPad or iPhone Stand Options

By Ryan C. Williams, Mike Levine

If you’re going to use your iPad or iPhone onstage, you’re going to need a holder or stand of some sort for it. Luckily, many companies now offer accessories designed to do just that.

For the iPad, the most popular types of holders attach to a microphone stand, and clamp around your iPad, holding it securely in place. Many allow you to position your iPad in either portrait or landscape orientation, and also offer adjustable viewing angles. Typically, you can clip such holders onto the same stand that’s holding your mic. However, in some cases, it might be better to use a dedicated stand.

If you have an iPhone or iPod touch, the IK Multimedia iKlip Xpand Mini ($39.99) allows for mic-stand–mounting your device.

For most musicians, the stand-based solution is best. However, if you have flat space around you in your setup, you can also find many tabletop stands available. Some stands, such as the Peavey Tablet Mounting System, can be stand-mounted or work on the tabletop, via a clamp.

Make sure that the stand you buy is compatible with your model of iPad. When you start shopping around, you’ll see that some of these stands are only compatible with certain models of Apple’s devices.
