By Chris Pichereau, Abshier House

The Surface Pro 4 is Microsoft’s fourth-generation Surface series 2-in-2 detachable. Announced on October 6, 2015, the Surface Pro 4 was launched alongside the Surface Book. The new Surface Pro 4 is more power-efficient, sports a more powerful CPU, increased RAM and SSD capacity, and comes with a slightly larger display. The Surface Pro 4 is backward compatible with its previous versions’ accessories.

Surface Pro 4 hardware and software configuration

The Surface Pro 4, while the same size as the Surface Pro 3, hosts a thinner screen bezel. This allows for a bigger size display at 12.3 inches (31 cm). The chassis on the new Surface is thinner and lighter than the previous version, while the screen resolution is larger.

To help avoid the use of the internal fan when the device is being used for lower level tasks (such as web browsing), the new cooling system of the Surface Pro 4 has been redesigned. In addition, all Surface Pro 4 models feature the 6th generation Skylake Intel Core processors. These processors run cooler and are more powerful than the previous Intel Core Haswells.

Other improved components include:

  • Maximum clock rate from the most powerful CPU option (i7-6650U) is equipped with 2.2 GHz, with options of 3.4 GHz in the Turbo Boost model

  • A completely fan-less m3-powered model

  • System memory and SSD options available in 4, 8, 16 GB and 128, 256, 512, 1024 GB

  • New Surface Pro 4 software configuration

The software configuration of the Surface Pro 4 includes:

    • 64 bit version of Windows 10 Pro

    • Free 30-day trial Microsoft Office

    • Mail, Calendar, People, Xbox (app), Photos, Movies and TV, Groove, and MS Edge

    • Tablet mode available when the Type Cover is detached from the device

    • Touch-centric interface when Type Cover is detached

    • Windows Hello-compatible camera

Surface Pro 4 features

The Surface Pro 4 would not be complete without some great updated features. These include:

  • A redesigned Surface Dock that is compatible with past and future Surface models.

The Surface Dock comes with two mini-display ports, four USB 3.0 ports, one audio out port, and one GB Ethernet.

  • A Surface Pro 4 Type Cover which is available with or without a fingerprint sensor.

The improved type cover also has improved magnetic stability for lap use, a mechanical keyboard, and a larger touchpad.

  • The updated Surface Pen which has 1024 levels of pressure and a heavier, rubberized tip.

The Surface Pro 4 currently fails to sleep properly, making the battery drain very quickly. However, a fix is being developed.
