How to Grab a Screen Capture on Your BlackBerry PlayBook

By Corey Sandler

One nice bit of programming, an element of the operating system itself, allows you to capture just about anything you see on the screen of the BlackBerry PlayBook. The capture is treated as if it were a photo, stored with pictures taken by the camera. For example, you can

  • Capture a web page for later reference (or as confirmation of an order or a price quote).

  • Capture a frame from a video or other visual media.

  • Capture images for use in a book like the one you’re reading right now.

To grab a screen capture, press the – and + buttons at the same time (the volume decrease and increase buttons) on the top edge of the BlackBerry PlayBook.

The full screen is grabbed at the tablet’s resolution of 1024 x 600. You can easily use those images in a presentation or slideshow. You can edit the images in any digital photo program, either on the PlayBook itself or on a personal computer. Here is a screen capture of the camera minimized from the full screen; alongside is the PlayBook’s Pictures folder.

Take care to honor the copyright of any material you see on the screen of your PlayBook. In general, it is permissible to make a copy of an image or text for your personal use, but the permission of the copyright holder is required before anything can be repurposed for commercial use.
