How to Manage Text Messages on Your Amazon Fire Phone

By Dan Gookin

You don’t have to manage your messages. Many people certainly don’t. But the potential exists on the Fire phone: If you ever want to destroy evidence of a conversation, or even do something as mild as change the text messaging ringtone, it’s possible.

Removing messages

Many people don’t bother deleting text message threads. But if you want to, you would follow these steps to delete a conversation:

  1. Long-press the conversation you want to remove.

Choose the conversation from the main screen in the Messaging app.

  2. Choose the Delete command.

    The conversation is gone.

You cannot undo the Delete command, and there is no “Are you sure?” prompt. When it’s gone, it’s gone.

Setting the text message ringtone

The sound you hear when a new text message floats in is the text-message notification ringtone. It might be the same sound you hear for all notifications, though it can be changed to something unique. If so, follow these steps to set the Messaging app’s ringtone:

  1. Open the Settings app.

  2. Choose Sounds & Notifications.

  3. Choose Change Your Ringtone.

  4. Tap the Phone item at the top of the screen.

You see the App Notifications screen.

  5. Choose the Messaging app from the list.

You may have to scroll down a ways to find the app.

On the Messaging screen, you see several options for setting notifications in the Messaging app. Ensure that both Notifications and Banners are on, which helps alert you to new messages. The Vibrate option is also good to have, which tells you something’s up when the phone is silenced.

  6. Choose Sound.

  7. Pluck a ringtone from the list.

  8. Touch the Done icon.

  9. Press the Home button to return to the Home screen.

You can also set text message ringtones for individual contents.

Setting individual contact ringtones

To distinguish between your bestest friends and only your mildly acceptable friends, you can assign individual text messaging ringtones to contacts. To do so, secretly follow these steps:

  1. Open the Settings app.

  2. Choose Sounds & Notifications.

  3. Choose Select Test Message Tones for Specific People.

The phone’s address book is displayed.

  4. Select a contact for that special messaging ringtone.

Scroll the list to find your buddy.

  5. Choose a ringtone from the list.

  6. Tap the Done icon.

    The special ringtone is assigned.

  7. Repeat Steps 4 through 6 to assign additional contact ringtones.

The specific ringtone plays when that contact sends you a text message.

You can use the Contacts app to view special ringtones for individual contacts. Look for the heading Text Ringtone (and Call Phone Ringtone, if you’ve assigned specific incoming call ringtones as well). The ringtones can be changed by editing the contact.
