How to Find Places with the Amazon Fire Phone Maps App
The Maps app on your Fire phone can help you find places in the real world, just as the Silk browser app helps you find places on the web. Both operations work basically the same way: Open the Maps app and type something to find in the Search text box. You can type a variety of terms in the Search box to find what you need.
Looking for a specific address
To locate an address, type it in the Search box; for example:
1600 Pennsylvania Ave. NW, Washington, D.C. 20006
Touch the Search button on the keyboard, and that location is shown on the map. The next step is getting directions.
You don’t need to type the entire address. Oftentimes, all you need is the street number and street name and then either the city name or zip code.
If you omit the city name or zip code, the Maps app looks for the closest matching address near your current location.
Touch the X button in the Search box to clear the previous search.
Finding a business, restaurant, or point of interest
You may not know an address, but you know when you crave tacos or perhaps the exotic flavors of Topeka. Maybe you need a hotel or a gas station, or you have to find a place that fixes dentures. To find a business entity or a point of interest, type its name in the Search box; for example:
This command flags movie theaters on the current Maps screen or nearby.
Have the Maps app jump to your current location to find locations near you. Otherwise, the Maps app looks for places near the area shown on the screen.
Or you can be specific and look for businesses near a certain location by specifying the city name, district, or zip code, such as
After typing this command and touching the Search button, you see a smattering of taco supplies found near Topeka, Kansas.
To see more information about a result, touch its card, such as the one for Tortilla Jack’s. Or touch the Results List icon to see a whole swath of cards. After touching a card, you can view more details.
You can touch the Directions icon on the restaurant’s (or any location’s) Details screen to get directions.
Every dot on the screen represents a search result.
Spread your fingers on the touchscreen to zoom in to the map.
If you really like the location, save it for later. That directs the Maps app to store the location as one of your bookmarked places. The location is flagged with the Pin icon on the Maps app screen.
Searching for favorite or recent places
Just as you can bookmark favorite websites on the Internet, you can bookmark favorite places in the real world by using the Maps app. The feature even has the same name: Bookmarks.
Create a bookmark in the Maps app by tapping the Bookmark icon on a location’s card. It can be a random spot, or a specific place, such as a restaurant or bordello. The key is to display the location’s card, which is where you’ll find the Bookmark icon.
To review bookmarked places or browse recent map searches, display the Shortcuts and Delighters panel: Swipe in from the right side of the screen, or use the tilt gesture. Bookmarked locations appear atop the list. Swipe down the panel to view recent search items. Touch any item to instantly zoom to that location.
Locating a contact
The Maps app also provides information about a contact’s location, as long as that information is available in the phone’s address book. You can look up home, work, or other locations and even get directions.
The secret to finding a contact’s location is to look in the Contacts app. Tap the contact’s entry in the address book and look for the View Address item. After you touch that item, the Maps app starts and drops a pin at the given location. A card is displayed, providing further details as well as the Directions icon for navigation instructions.
You can hone in on where your contacts are located by using the map. This trick works when you’ve specified an address for the contact — either home or work or another location. If so, your phone can easily help you find that location or even give you directions.
