How to Change the Orientation on the Amazon Fire Phone

By Dan Gookin

The Fire phone’s accelerometer is used by various apps to determine whether you’ve reoriented the phone from an upright to a horizontal position. You can test this feature by opening an app, such as the Silk Browser. Heed these steps:

  1. Start the Silk Browser app.

Tap the Silk Browser app icon on the Home screen. If you don’t see the Home screen, press the Home button, and then look for the icon near the bottom. If you don’t see it at the bottom, press the Home button again and look for the app icon on the App Grid.

After the web browser app starts, it displays a web page. If not, browse to a web page so that you have visual content on the screen.

  2. Tilt the phone to the left.

The web page switches itself to the horizontal, or landscape, orientation. For some apps, it’s truly the best way to see things.

  3. Tilt the phone upright again.

The web page redisplays itself in its original, upright mode.

The rotation feature may not work for all apps, especially games that present themselves in one orientation only. The Home and lock screens do not rotate.

The screen rotation feature might also be disabled.
