How to Add Horizontal and Vertical Drawing Controls in MicroWorld EX

By Camille McCue

Just like a real Etch A Sketch, your MicroWorld EX Sketcher Etcher needs a way to control drawing horizontal lines and vertical lines. Follow these steps to create four buttons — left, right, down, and up — to control the drawing stylus:

  1. On the toolbar, click the Create a Button button. Then click anywhere on the workspace.

    The Button dialog box appears.

  2. In the dialog box, type L (for left) in the Label field and seth 270 fd 5 in the Instruction field. Leave the Once radio button and Visible check box selected.

    The dialog box appears.

The seth 270 command points the drawing stylus to the left (or west), and the fd 5 command moves the stylus forward 5 pixels. Because the stylus pen is down, it leaves a short mark on the Sketcher Etcher screen.

  3. Click OK.

The L button is added to the workspace.

  4. Drag the L button to reposition it to the left dial control of your Sketcher Etcher.

You may want to resize the button to reduce its size so that it fits on the background dial. To do so, Ctrl-click (Win) or Command-click (Mac) on the button. Sizing dots appear on the corners of the button — drag one of those dots to resize your button, and then release.

  5. Repeat Steps 1–3 three more times to create the Right, Down, and Up buttons. Use these commands for each button:

    • Label:RInstruction:seth 90 fd 5

    • Label:DInstruction:seth 180 fd 5

    • Label:UInstruction:seth 0 fd 5

The unit of circular measurement is the degree. There are 360 degrees in a circle. In MicroWorlds EX, the top of the circle is 0 degrees (this is north on a compass). East is 90 degrees; the bottom of the circle is 180 degrees (this is south on a compass). West is 270 degrees.

  6. Reposition the new buttons similar to the example.

These buttons represent your Sketcher Etcher control dials.

  7. Click each button a few times to make sure it functions as expected:

    • Clicking the L button causes the drawing stylus to move left, drawing a line as it moves.

    • Clicking the R button causes the drawing stylus to draw as it moves right.

    • Clicking the U button causes the stylus to draw as it moves up.

    • Clicking the D button causes the stylus to draw as it moves down.
