Top 10 Pro Features on the Canon EOS 6D

By Doug Sahlin

Your Canon EOS 6D is an advanced camera. This is one of the first full-frame cameras Canon has offered that cost less than $2500. The camera is packed with features; here are the top ten pro features you can use to capture compelling images:

  1. The EOS 6D has a continuous drive capture rate of up to 4.5 frames per second.

This enables you to capture action sequences of athletes in action or your dog chasing a Frisbee.

  2. The EOS 6D has built-in Wi-Fi.

The Wireless feature enables you to download images from your camera to your computer over a Wi-Fi network. You can also use this feature to send pictures to other Canon cameras with this feature or upload pictures to your smart phone with the Apple iOS 5.0 or later or the Android OS 2.33 or later. You can also wirelessly upload your images to social networking sites through Canon Image Gateway as well as print images directly from the camera to a Wi-Fi printer.

  3. The EOS 6D has a built-in GPS receiver.

The GPS feature gives you the option of embedding the GPS coordinates of the location where you photograph an image as image metadata. If you use Adobe Photoshop Lightroom to edit your images, you can use the GPS information, which is embedded as EXIF metadata, to map your images in Lightroom’s Map module.

  4. The EOS 6D uses the SD memory card.

Your camera captures 20MB images. Purchase an SD card that is at least 8GB. Always make sure you carry a couple of extra memory cards with you. It’s always better to fill up a card and then switch to another one instead of deleting images or capturing images using one of the smaller images sizes, which kind of defeats the purpose of having a camera that can capture 20.2 megapixel images.

  5. The EOS 6D is capable of tethered capture.

Using the EOS utility disc, you can set up tethered capture with Adobe Photoshop Lightroom, which enables you to view images on a large computer screen instead of the 3-inch camera LCD monitor.

  6. The EOS 6D can capture images with the Adobe RGB color space.

The Adobe RGB color space has a larger color gamut than the standard sRGB color space. Enable this option through your camera menu if you edit your images in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom or Adobe Photoshop.

  7. The EOS 6D automatically cleans the camera sensor when you power up or power off the camera.

This feature shakes any dust off the sensor. Sensor dust shows up as dark dots on light colored areas of your images. In spite of this feature, you should still never changes lenses in a dusty environment.

  8. The EOS 6D has a silent shutter mode.

This option is handy when you photograph events where shutter noise would distract a performer or speaker. It’s also handy for street photography.

  9. The EOS 6D has a full frame sensor.

The feature is great if you’re a landscape photographer. With a full frame sensor, you get the wide view instead of cropping to a smaller part of what the lens is capable of capturing.

  10. The EOS 6D features a 1,040,000 LCD monitor with a reflection resistant coating.

This means you can easily view the LCD monitor in bright light.
