Creating a Book with Your Images

By Doug Sahlin

Your EOS 6D gives you the power to create compelling images. You can export images from Canon Digital Professional for print or for the web, or you can use the images to create a stunning photo book. There are lots of companies that create books from images, but one of the best is Blurb. You can create soft cover and hard cover books with Blurb and you have different paper options as well.

Blurb also makes it easy for you to create a book with their free BookSmart software. The software gives you many options for designing a book with a single photo per page or many photos per page. The page can contain text or just images. When you complete your book design, you upload it to Blurb directly from BookSmart. You then have fourteen days to order a copy of the book. After you order a copy of the book, you can also make it available for public sale. In addition, you can create a book badge for the book and offer it for sale from your website. When the book badge is clicked, your website visitor is transported to Blurb’s website where they can preview the book and order it. The following figure shows one example of a book that was created via Blurb.

To create a book of your photos:

  1. Export the images you want to use for your book.

Blurb BooksSart accepts images in the .png and .jpeg format. You can export the images from Canon Digital Professional Pro or another image-editing software. The size will vary depending on what type of book you’re creating. Blurb supplies a plethora of information from their website. You can view Blurb’s bookmaking tutorials before you get started.

Create a new folder for the book images. This will make it easy to locate them when you populate your book with images.

  2. Download Blurb’s BookSmart software.

You can download the software for PC or the Mac..

  3. Install the software on your computer.

Installation is pretty straightforward for the Mac and PC.

  4. Launch BookSmart.

The Blurb splash screen launches and you have the option to create a new book or open a book you’ve already created with the software (see the following figure). Notice the option to view tutorials — an option you explore before creating a book.

  5. Click Start a New Book.

The New Book Setup dialog appears.

  6. Enter a title for your book and your name as the author.

This will appear on the cover of your book and the spine if you create a hardcover book.

  7. Choose a book type.

You can choose Landscape (the book is wider than it is tall), Portrait (the book is taller than it is wide), or Square. In most instances, Landscape will be your best bet when you have a mix of images that are landscape and portrait. Don’t use the Trade or Paperback options for a photo book — the paper quality is not good enough for photos. Standard Landscape is a 10 x 8 book, and the Large Landscape is a 13 x 11 book. Both are good options but the Large Landscape option is wonderful if you want to create a coffee table book.

  8. Click Pricing.

The pricing options for each book appear. The books have a minimum of 20 pages and a maximum of 440 pages. Blurb books are a bargain; the least expensive book is $10.95.

  9. Click Continue.

The dialog refreshes and you are presented with a variety of presets you can use to create your book (see the following figure). Photo Book is a logical choice.

  10. Choose the desired preset and click Continue.

The dialog refreshes and you have the option to choose the images for your book (see the following figure). If you created a new folder for your book’s images back in Step 1, your images are all neatly stowed in a folder. Notice you also have the option to import images you have stored on social media sites and photo sharing sites (although it’s much better to import pristine images you’ve edited to perfection in your favorite image-editing program).

  11. Click Get Photos From Computer.

The Get Photos dialog box appears.

  12. After selecting the images, click Continue.

The Auto-Flow Your Photos dialog appears. The default option is No Thanks (and it’s best to keep it that way). The alternative is to let Blurb flow the photos into pages. Try it if you like, but creative photographers usually like to arrange their own photos and tell a story. If you decide to let Blurb arrange the book, choose one of the options from the drop-down menu.

  13. Click Continue.

The Choose a Theme dialog appears (see the following figure). Themes are a matter of personal preference, and there are different themes for different book types.

  14. Choose a theme and then click Continue.

The dialog disappears and your images are imported into the BookSmart interface.

  18. Continue adding images until your book is done.

  19. After you create your book, click Preview.

  20. At this stage you have the option to edit your book or order your book.

If you click Order, you’ll be prompted to upload the images to Blurb. If you don’t have an account, you’ll be prompted to create one. If you have a Blurb account, you can log in.
