How to Play Solitaire on a Windows Computer

By Nancy C. Muir

Windows provides many games such as Solitaire that you can play for fun and to relieve stress. You play Windows Solitaire like you might play real solitaire, by arranging cards in order on-screen.

1Choose Start→Games, then double-click Solitaire.

The Solitaire window appears, and the cards are dealt in the opening tableau.

If this is the first time you’re playing games, Windows displays a Set Up Game dialog box. If it does, make choices (such as whether to check automatically for game updates) and click OK.

2Drag cards to arrange them in descending numerical order, alternating colors.

You can also click the card you want to move, then click the card you want to place it on top of, to move cards without dragging.

When Solitaire opens, if you need help with game rules, read the How to Play message that appears.

3Continue playing until you win or get stuck.

The object of Solitaire is to fill the four empty spaces (Home stacks) at the top of the window from Ace to King, separated by suit. So drag cards from the tableau below to the Home stacks when you can.

If you move cards from a stack in the tableau, leaving only face-down cards, click the top-most card to flip it over. If a stack becomes empty, you can drag a King (and the cards piled on top of that King) into the empty slot.

If no moves are available, click the stack of cards in the upper-left corner to deal three cards onto the discard pile. You can play the top-most card onto the tableau or the Home stacks as desired.

4To deal a new game, choose Game→New Game (or press F2).

Unlike life, it’s easy to start over with Solitaire! When prompted, choose Quit and Start a New Game.

5To close Solitaire, click the Close button.

The game is ended and the Solitaire window is closed.

Don’t like a move you just made? Undo it by choosing Game→Undo. This works for the last move only, however. You can also get unstuck if you’re on a losing streak by choosing Game→Hint.
