For Seniors: Find a File or Open an Application with File Explorer

File Explorer is a program on your Windows 8.1 laptop you can use to find a file or folder by navigating through an outline of folders and subfolders. It’s a great way to look for files on your computer.

  1. From the Desktop, click the File Explorer button on the taskbar (it looks like a set of folders).

File Explorer will open a window.

  2. In the resulting File Explorer window, double-click a folder in the main window or in the list along the left side to open the folder.

  3. The folder’s contents are displayed. If necessary, open a series of folders in this manner until you locate the file you want.

  4. When you find the file you want, double-click it to open it.

To see different perspectives and information about files in File Explorer, click the View tab and choose one of the following options: Extra Large Icons, Large Icons, Medium Icons, or Small Icons for graphical displays, or choose Details to show details such as the last date files were modified.

If the program or file is one that you use often, consider adding a shortcut to your desktop so you don’t have to search for it again.
