Record Your Performance with the Magic GarageBand in iLife ’11

By Tony Bove

GarageBand can turn your Mac into a home recording studio. When you’re ready to record a performance with the instrument you chose for My Instrument along with the Magic GarageBand, follow these steps:

  1. Click the red Record button, and then start playing along.

Just like a bandleader counting off time, GarageBand plays metronome clicks and displays numbers on the green strip under the stage (as in 1-2-3-4 for 4/4 time) for exactly one full measure before starting to play the song and enable recording. The green strip turns red as you record, and the volume level of the instrument appears in the instrument’s bubble.

  2. To stop recording at any time, click the red Record button again.

The song continues playing, but your recording stops.

  3. To continue recording from any point as the song plays, click the red Record button.

As the song continues playing, you can play along and record.

  4. To stop playback and record another take from the beginning, click the Play button (or press the spacebar), and then click the red Record button.

After clicking the Play button or pressing the spacebar, playback stops. After you click the red Record button, the metronome’s countdown begins again (refer to Step 1). You can stop the playback and start recording take after take.

You should repeat Step 4 and record as many takes as you need, because GarageBand can save each one and let you choose the one you want.

  5. When you’re finished, click the Open in GarageBand button in the lower-right corner of the window.

The main GarageBand window appears, with separate tracks for each Magic GarageBand instrument.
