How to Share Your Song or Podcast from GarageBand in iLife ’11

By Tony Bove

The multiple-track display of your finished song or podcast episode in GarageBand ’11 is impressive, and now that you have the mixing just right for all tracks — you’re ready to share your creation with the rest of the world.

If you saved your song project using an iLife preview, your song is already available to other iLife applications, such as iMovie and iDVD. You can transfer a podcast episode project directly to iWeb by choosing Share→Send Podcast to iWeb.

You can transfer your great work of musical genius to iTunes. Follow these steps:

  1. Choose Share→Send Song to iTunes.

After choosing Share→Send Song to iTunes, you have a chance to set the name of an iTunes playlist as well as the artist and composer.

  2. Enter the iTunes playlist name, artist and composer names, and album title.

iTunes automatically places the song in its library according to the playlist and album titles you specified.

You can set all this song information in advance in the My Info pane of the GarageBand Preferences window. Choose GarageBand→Preferences and click the My Info tab.

  3. (Optional) Turn on the Compress option to select options for a compressed file.

  4. Click Share to begin the transfer to iTunes.

GarageBand mixes all your tracks automatically, according to the settings you selected, and exports the song as a two-track stereo audio file to iTunes. After your song is in iTunes, you can play it on your Mac and on your iPod or iPhone, and burn a CD with it as well as use it with projects in iPhoto, iMovie, and iDVD.
