How to Use Your Flip Video Camera’s Buttons

By Joe Hutsko, Drew Davidson

Using your Flip camera to capture, view, and delete videos is pretty straightforward, thanks to easy-to-understand buttons. Besides the primary things the Flip buttons do, most of the buttons provide a second purpose, depending on what you’re doing and how you press the buttons.

For example, tapping the Play/Pause button begins playing or pausing a selected video, but pressing and holding the Play/Pause button for a few seconds activates the Play All feature, which plays every video saved on your Flip, one after another.

The following list describes all your Flip’s buttons.

  • Power: Press to turn on your camcorder. Press and hold for a few seconds to turn off your camera.

  • Record: Press to start or stop recording video.

  • Play/Pause: Press to play a selected video. Press and hold to play all the videos saved on your Flip. Press while watching a video to pause the video.

  • Up (+) and Down (-): When recording video, press Up to zoom in or press Down to zoom out. While watching a video, press Up or Down to increase or decrease the playback volume, respectively.

  • Delete: Press to display the delete screen to delete a single video or all videos saved on your Flip camera. Press and hold to activate or deactivate the Delete Lock feature.

  • Left and Right: Press Left to go backward to a previous saved video, and press Right to skip to the next saved video. (Pressing and holding either button quickly advances you forward or backward through all your saved videos.) When watching a video, press and hold Left or Right to rewind or fast forward, respectively; let go to resume watching your video.

If you upgraded to the Flip SlideHD from an earlier Flip model, your SlideHD buttons work like your older Flip camera’s buttons, except, of course, that your Slide’s buttons aren’t actual physical buttons but rather “virtual buttons” that appear on your SlideHD’s 3-inch widescreen display. Your Slide also boasts the following additional controls and features not found in the other Flip models, including the following:

  • Widescreen: When slid closed, the screen displays basic control buttons and a viewfinder screen. When slid open, it displays videos in widescreen mode and reveals the Slide Strip.

  • Slide Strip: Slide your fingertip left or right to browse through videos saved on your Flip.

  • Menu: Located to the right of the Slide Strip; tap to display the menu screen, which displays the following choices:

    • All Video: Opens the default Camcorder Videos folder and displays the first video saved in that folder

    • Flip Channels: Displays the first of any videos you share with others using the Flip Channels feature, which you set up using the FlipShare program on your Mac or Windows PC

    • Shortcuts: Displays Favorites, Movies, and Photos that you drag and drop into those same-named folders using the FlipShare program on your Mac or Windows PC.
