Natural Treatments for Hair Loss

By Scott J. Banks, Joe Kraynak, J. J. Virgin

Normally, you shed about 50 to 100 hairs daily. If you’re losing more than that, something’s wrong, and you need to find out what it is.

Common causes of hair loss include medical issues, such as thyroid malfunction, autoimmune conditions (including autoimmune alopecia [hair loss]), ringworm, and lupus erythematous; side effects of medications, such as cholesterol lowering drugs, Parkinson’s medications, proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) for blocking stomach acid, anti‐inflammatories, and beta blockers; hormonal changes in both men and women; poor diet and nutrition; and other things like pregnancy, excessive stress, certain hairstyles and hair products, and so on.

Therefore, before you assume that your hair loss is strictly genetic, look into these other possible causes and be sure to check side effects and adverse reactions associated with all pharmaceuticals you’re taking.

If you can’t track down the specific cause for your hair loss, try adjusting your diet first. Eliminate refined processed carbohydrates and poor‐quality fats. Consume high‐quality protein from lean meats and oily fish. Eat healthy fats from nuts and seeds, avocados, coconuts, and olives. Consume foods rich in biotin found in nuts, brown rice, oats, and brewer’s yeast. Take a high‐quality B nutritional supplement daily. (Nuts and seeds contain high amounts of the B vitamins.)

The following natural cures may be helpful in preventing or reversing hair loss:

Natural Cure Dose
Biotin 2,000 to 3,000 mcg daily
Choline (choline‐stabilized orthosilicic acid) 100 mg two to three times daily
Silicon (choline‐stabilized orthosilicic acid) 5 mg two to three times daily
Essential fatty acids (EPA/DHA and gamma‐linolenic acid
from borage oil or evening primrose oil)
3,000 to 4,000 mg EPA/DHA and 1,500 mg gamma‐linolenic
acid daily
Saw palmetto 200 mg twice daily
Zinc glycinate chelate 20 mg twice daily (see Appendix A for precautions)
MSM 1,000 mg three times daily

Also try a shampoo with rosemary oil to improve circulation, or buy rosemary oil and add it to your shampoo.
