How to Make Flaming Brandy Coffee

By Dede Wilson

Serving coffee at holiday functions is a great way to warm your guests on a cold wintery evening. This coffee, flavored with orange, cinnamon, and brandy livens up any party, but might go especially well at a Christmas cookie party. Brûlot means “burnt brandy.” This recipe makes enough for a party.

Café Brûlot

Preparation time: 5 minutes

Yield: 10 to 12 servings

3 tablespoons sugar

Zest of 1 orange, cut into thin strips

One 3-inch cinnamon stick

1 vanilla bean

1-1/2 cups brandy

6 cups brewed, hot, strong black coffee

  1. Place the sugar, zest, cinnamon stick, and vanilla bean in a large heatproof bowl.

  2. In a small pot, heat the brandy over low heat until warm. Pour over the ingredients and ignite carefully by holding a lit match close to the alcohol until it ignites.

  3. Douse the flames by pouring the coffee over the brandy mixture. Stir, remove the zest and vanilla bean, and serve immediately.
