An open book just begs to be read. You’re used to flipping pages in a physical book, but an e-reader like the Kindle Fire provides you with several ways to move around it.

The simplest way to move one page forward or one page back is to tap your finger anywhere on the right or left side of the page, respectively. Try this to move from the title page to a page of text within the book.

With a book page displayed, tap it to see the tools shown, including a button to take you to the Kindle Fire Home screen, a Back button to go back one screen, a Font menu to make adjustments to the appearance of fonts and the page, a Menu button to access additional settings, and a Search button to initiate a search for text in the book.

You can also tap the Menu icon in the Options bar and choose from these options to move around your book:

  • Cover: Display the book cover.

  • Table of Contents: Go to the table of contents, if there’s a table of contents available for the current title; some children’s books and novels, for example, have no table of contents.

  • Beginning: Return to the beginning of the book.

  • Location: Display the dialog box shown. Location is calculated by the number of bits of information in the book up to the current location. You can note the location of a particular page by checking this information above the progress bar at the bottom of any page. Tap in the location field and use the onscreen keyboard to enter that location, and then tap OK to go there.

  • Sync to Furthest Page: This option moves you to the last page you read in the book by using any Kindle reader apps or devices.

  • My Notes & Marks: Opens a list showing the location of bookmarks, highlights, and notes that you’ve inserted into the book. Tap a selection to go that page.

The progress bar along the bottom of the screen indicates how far along in the publication you are at the moment. To move around the publication, you can press the circle on this bar and drag it in either direction.
