How to Use Siri to Translate Words and Phrases on Your iPhone

By Dwight Spivey

One of Siri’s best new features in iOS 11 is the ability to translate English into Mandarin, French, German, Italian, or Spanish. That’s great if you’re on a road trip and don’t speak the local language.

In today’s global economy, this could be a very useful feature. Imagine that you are trying to sell an item to an international audience. The translate feature could be a quick and easy way to make your words understandable to a larger audience whose native language isn’t English.

Apple plans to expand this feature. Its potential is exciting.

To translate text between languages, follow these steps:

  1. Activate Siri.
  2. Say “translate,” followed by your phrase and the language of your choice.

Siri displays the translation on your screen and speaks it.

Tap the Play button to the left of the translation to hear Siri speak it again. The Play option could also be a useful feature for helping you learn key phrases if you are planning to spend time in an area where one of the translated languages is spoken.
