How to Use Siri on Your iPhone - dummies

By Joe Hutsko, Barbara Boyd

Siri on your iPhone is a close second to her human counterpart, the executive assistant. After you establish a rapport with Siri, you may wonder what you ever did without her. Following is a partial list of things Siri can help you with:

  • Make phone calls

  • Schedule meetings

  • Open apps on your iPhone

  • Write and read messages

  • Retrieve voicemail messages

  • Adjust iPhone settings such as screen brightness or Do Not Disturb

  • Relay the weather forecast

  • Find a restaurant and request reservations

  • Use Find my Friends to see where the people you know are hanging out

  • Find the nearest movie theater, tell you what’s playing, and buy tickets

  • Play requested music

  • Write your grocery list

  • Set up reminders

To use Siri, first you have to turn it on by following these steps. While you’re in Settings, you can adjust some of the Siri settings:

  1. Tap Settings→General→Siri.

  2. Tap On to turn Siri on.

  3. Adjust your optional settings.

    Choose from the following:

    • Tap Language and then tap the language you want to use to speak to Siri.

    • Tap Voice Gender and decide if you want a male or female assistant.

    • Tap Voice Feedback to choose if you want Siri to always repeat what you say. The default is only when you are in Handsfree mode, which is when you speak to Siri while using the headset, a Bluetooth device, or holding your iPhone to your ear.

    • My Info tells Siri who you are. Tap it and Contacts opens; select your Info card. Siri also uses people you indicate as related to better understand your commands.

    • Raise to Speak is a great way to use Siri in public. Tap On. When your iPhone is awake, even if the screen is locked, hold your iPhone upright in your hand and then bring it to your ear; you hear two rapid beeps to let you know Siri is ready to listen. Speak your request.

  4. Swipe right or tap General and then Settings in the upper left corner to return to the main Settings screen.

You can also press the Home button to return to the Home screen.
