Your iPhone 5 doesn't need a computer at all, because you can directly download apps, music, and movies from the App Store and iTunes Store. However, if you do have a Mac or PC, synchronizing (or matching the information on) your iPhone with your computer is easy.

  1. On your Mac or PC (not your iPhone), install the latest version of iTunes.

  2. Connect the supplied cable to your iPhone and your computer.

iTunes automatically recognizes your iPhone and adds it to the iTunes source list (at the left side of the iTunes window). If this is the first time you've synced your iPhone using the cable, you're led through a short list of questions.

  3. Click your iPhone in the source list.

    The iPhone's Info screen opens.

  4. Click the tabs along the top of the iTunes window to configure what you'd like to sync with your iPhone.

For example, click the Music tab to specify which songs, albums, and playlists you'd like to copy from your computer to your iPhone.

  5. Click the Sync button at the lower right of the iTunes window.

You'll see progress messages as your selected media and apps are synchronized.

  6. After the synchronization is complete, you can disconnect the USB cable from your computer and exit iTunes.

It's fine to leave your iPhone connected if the battery needs recharging. You can press the Home button at any time to see how much battery juice is left.
