How to Download Books and Media to Your iPhone

By Edward C. Baig, Bob LeVitus

You may have noticed that the App Store app on your iPhone offers nothing but apps. iTunes on your computer, on the other hand, has sections for Music, Movies, TV Shows, Books, Podcasts, and iTunes U in addition to Apps.

On your iPhone, you obtain music, audiobooks, movies, and TV shows with the iTunes Store app; books with the free iBooks app, which you’ll have to download if you don’t already have it; and magazines with Newsstand. To download podcasts or iTunes U content, however, you need the Podcasts or iTunes U apps, which (curiously) are not included with many iPhones right out of the box.

The good news is that these apps are free in the App Store, so if you want to shop for books, podcasts, or iTunes U content on your iPhone, you should probably go download any or all of these apps now.

Former tech editor Dennis Cohen explained it to his teenage granddaughter thusly:

Think of iTunes as a shopping mall with a bunch of stores (that is, the Music, Movies, TV Shows, Books, Podcasts, and iTunes U links) in a single location. Your iPhone doesn’t have a mall, so you shop for different kinds of content in the appropriate store (that is, the App Store, iTunes, iBooks, Newsstand, Podcasts, and iTunes U apps).

And because these store apps all work pretty much the same, after you learn how to use the App Store app, you will also know how to use all the other store apps.
