How to Display All Windows 8.1 Apps

By Peter Weverka, Mark Justice Hinton

The Start screen displays only some of the apps available in Windows 8.1. To see all the apps available in Windows 8.1, follow these steps:

1Select the All Apps button. This button is on the bottom left of the screen.

The Apps screen appears.

2You may have to roll the mouse wheel toward you or drag from right to left to see all the icons.

Besides scrolling, you can also use these techniques to locate an app:

Sorting: Open the Sort drop-down menu and select an option to arrange apps by name, by the date they were installed, by most used, or by category.

Searching: Type the name of the app in the Search box in the upper-right corner of the screen.

3By scrolling, sorting, or searching, locate the Calculator app.

After you locate the app, use one of the following methods to select — but not open — the Calculator tile:

Mouse: Position the pointer over the tile and right-click. (A left click would open the app.)

Touchscreen: Swipe slightly down or up on the tile. (A direct tap would open the app.)

Keyboard: Use the arrow keys to select the app. Then press the context menu key (shown in the margin), which is usually next to the right-hand Windows key.

A check mark next to a tile indicates that the tile is selected.

The app bar appears automatically when you select a tile.

4Select Pin to Start to place the Calculator tile on the Start screen.

The app bar disappears and you return to the Start screen, where you see the Calculator tile you selected in Step 3.

To remove an app tile from the Start screen, right-click the tile. The Customize bar appears. Select the Unpin from Start button on the Customize bar. (The programs are not removed when you unpin.)

5Select the All Apps button (in the bottom left of the screen) to return to the Apps screen.

Click the Return to Start screen button to return to the Start screen. This button is located in the lower left portion of the screen. It shows an upward-pointing arrow.
