How to Configure Lion Server’s Podcast Service with the Server App

By John Rizzo

The Server app in Lion Server gives you a basic setup, meant to be used with the simpler Podcast Publisher user app. The Server app’s access to Podcast services is suitable for home use. If you’re using Podcast Producer in schools or in professional settings or need the workflow tools for creating multiple podcasts, don’t use Server Admin to configure instead.

If simple is all you need, you’re in the right place. To configure Podcast service with the Server app, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Server app, click the Podcast icon in the left column, and turn the big switch to On.

This step activates the Podcast Library.

  2. Set user access to the Podcast content with the pop-up menu called Podcast Library Feeds Are Viewable By.

    The choices:

    • Anyone means any computer user can access podcasts.

    • Authenticated Users are people with accounts on Lion Server and who are logged in.

    • Podcast Owners restricts access to users you designate as Administrators in the Administrators field. To add a user, click the Add (+) button and select a user from the list that appears.

You can access the library by clicking the Manage Library link in the lower right of the Podcast pane. This opens your web browser with a list of podcasts.

In order to access the library, you need wiki service turned on. If you don’t see the Manage Library link, you instead see a message telling you to Enable Wiki to Manage the Podcast Library. If you see this message, click the Wiki icon in the left column and turn on wiki service.

Once you’re in the Podcast Library Wiki page, you can view podcasts, delete them, and read information about them. To make changes to the information, use Podcast Publisher (in the /Applications/Utilities folder). If you want to have other users access the page, access this URL, where server is the domain name of your server:

Note that this is a different web page and URL from the one that Server Admin creates.
