If an auto dealer discounts the price of a $20,000 car by 10% and then reduces the amount of the discount by 25%, what is the final asking price of the car, before taxes and fees?

In the given sequence a_{1}, a_{2}, a_{3}, a_{4}, where a_{1} = 1 and a_{n}_{ + 1} = 2a_{n} + 2, what is the value of a_{4}?
Answers and explanations

A 10% discount of a $20,000 price is $2,000. A 25% reduction of the $2,000 discount brings the new discount to $1,500, for an asking price of $18,500 for the car.

Use the formula to find a_{2} by substituting a_{1} for a_{n} and a_{2} for a_{n}_{+1}. Now the formula becomes a_{2} = 2a_{1} + 2. Because a_{1} = 1, a_{2} = 2(1) + 2, or 4. Do this again with a_{2} and a_{3} for an a_{3} value of 10 and an a_{4} value of 22.
