Fill-in-the-Blanks on the GRE Math Test — Practice Questions
Some questions on the GRE Math test ask you to solve a problem but don’t include any answer choices. In these cases, you have to work out the problem and then supply your own answer.
The following practice questions include a word problem and a number sequence problem. In both cases, you need to enter your answer in the field provided.
If an auto dealer discounts the price of a $20,000 car by 10% and then reduces the amount of the discount by 25%, what is the final asking price of the car, before taxes and fees?
In the given sequence a1, a2, a3, a4, where a1 = 1 and an + 1 = 2an + 2, what is the value of a4?
Answers and explanations
A 10% discount of a $20,000 price is $2,000. A 25% reduction of the $2,000 discount brings the new discount to $1,500, for an asking price of $18,500 for the car.
Use the formula to find a2 by substituting a1 for an and a2 for an+1. Now the formula becomes a2 = 2a1 + 2. Because a1 = 1, a2 = 2(1) + 2, or 4. Do this again with a2 and a3 for an a3 value of 10 and an a4 value of 22.
