How to Cook Toasted Snacks in 5 Minutes as a Student

One of the fastest ways to cook a 5-minute snack, as a student with limited time, is to toast it up! Being creative with what you throw between the toast will make others drool with jealousy.

Tuna Mayo Toastie

A cool and refreshing filling between two slices of hot, crunchy toast, this Tuna Mayo Toastie is good brain food and pretty tasty too.

Preparation time: 5 minutes

Serves: 1

2 slices of bread

1/2 tin tuna

2 spoonfuls of mayonnaise

2 spoonfuls of tinned sweetcorn

Salt and pepper

  1. Place the bread in a toaster.

  2. While that’s toasting, mix the tuna, mayo and sweetcorn in a bowl and season with salt and pepper.

  3. When the toast’s ready, spread the tuna mayo mixture over one slice and put the other one on top. Cut in half to form a delicious tuna mayo toastie.

Tomato and Mozzarella Toastie

Go continental and sandwich Italian cuisine between a very British snack. Tomatoes and mozzarella cheese are a simple but classic combination, so try whipping up this snack to impress your housemates.

4 slices of bread

4 tomatoes, thinly sliced

150 grams of mozzarella, sliced

Salt and pepper

Drizzle of olive oil (optional)

  1. Toast the bread.

  2. Put a layer of tomatoes on two of the slices of toast and cover with a layer of mozzarella. Cover the layer of cheese with another layer of tomatoes and season with salt and pepper. Add a light drizzle of olive oil if you like. Put the remaining two slices of toast on top. Mwah!

If you have any fresh basil, add a couple of basil leaves on top of the mozzarella to make it a truly Italian feast.

Variation: Try using thick, floury ciabatta bread. Toast under the grill if you can’t fit it in the toaster.

Spicy Mushrooms on Toast

This snack turns up the heat in the kitchen by adding a bit of spice to your everyday mushrooms on toast, but, best of all, it’s just as simple to make.

Serves: 1

Glug of olive oil

1/4 onion, finely sliced

Handful of mushrooms, chopped into little pieces

Generous pinch of curry powder

50 millilitres (couple of large spoonfuls) of double cream

2 slices of bread

  1. Heat the oil in a frying pan over a medium heat and fry the onions until they start to turn golden brown.

  2. Mix the mushrooms with a pinch of curry powder. Add the mushrooms to the pan and fry until they too turn a light brown colour (about 5 minutes).

  3. Toast the bread.

  4. Add the cream to the mushrooms and gently fry until the cream thickens.

  5. Spoon the creamy, spicy mushrooms over the toast.

Variation: Add a dash of Tabasco at the end if you like your mushrooms really spicy!
