How to Make Meaty Snacks for a Party as a Student Cook

Finger food is the perfect thing to cook up for parties and students need their protein. These meaty snacks are easy to pick up and eat, and party-goers can mix and match it with the other food on the table.

Pigs in Blankets

Most people usually have Pigs in Blankets (chipolata sausages wrapped in bacon) with their Christmas dinners, but you can always eat them as a snack beforehand. They’re simple party food.

Preparation time: 2 minutes

Cooking time: 45 minutes

Makes: 1 plate of Pigs in Blankets

2 handfuls of chipolata sausages

5 to 6 rashers of bacon

  1. Cook the sausages according to the packet.

  2. Fry the bacon for about 7 minutes – don’t let it turn crispy.

  3. When both are cooked, leave the bacon to cool slightly and then slice into strips and wrap each sausage in a strip, making sure the join is at the bottom.

  4. Skewer each ‘pig’ with a cocktail stick and place on a plate.

Cheese and Ham Quiche

Face facts, a party isn’t a party without a bit of quiche. They’re surprisingly easy to make, but you need a 9-inch quiche tin to cook it in.

Preparation time: 5 minutes

Cooking time: 40 minutes

Makes: 1 Cheese and Ham Quiche

300-gram packet of shortcrust pastry

3 eggs

240 millilitres of single cream

Salt and pepper

2 slices of ham, cut into strips

80 grams of grated cheese

  1. Preheat the oven to 200°C.

  2. Roll out the pastry until it’s about half a centimetre thick and line the tin with it.

  3. Crack the eggs in a bowl and whisk until thoroughly mixed. When whisked, beat in the cream and add salt and pepper.

  4. Place the ham and three-quarters of the cheese into the tin and pour the cream and egg mixture over the cheese and ham. Scatter the rest of the cheese over the top. Crimp the edges of the pastry.

  5. Pop in the oven for 40 minutes and allow to cool slightly before removing from the tin, slicing into portions and serving.

Chicken Dippers

Chicken dippers are great as a kid, but they make a great comeback on the buffet table too. They’re delicious dipped in some creamy mayo or tomato sauce.

Preparation time: 10 minutes

Cooking time: 20 to 25 minutes

Makes: Around 10 chicken dippers

3 slices of toasted bread, crusts removed

Pinch of chilli powder


2 eggs

4 chicken breasts, cut into bite-sized pieces

Olive oil

  1. Preheat the oven to 220°C.

  2. Grate the bread or blitz in a blender until it turns into breadcrumbs.

  3. Add a few pinches of chilli powder and some salt to the breadcrumbs and mix well. Place in a small bowl.

  4. Crack the eggs into a clean bowl and whisk until smooth.

  5. Dip the chicken pieces into the eggs, then into the breadcrumbs, coating them completely. Then place on a plate. Repeat with the other chicken pieces.

  6. Lightly oil a baking tray and place in the oven for 5 minutes to get hot.

  7. After 5 minutes, take the tray out and place the chicken on it. Put back in the oven and bake for 20 to 25 minutes.

  8. Check that the chicken is cooked by cutting open a dipper and seeing if the middle is white, with any juices running clear.

  9. Serve on a plate next to some dips.
