How to Cube a Mango without Peeling It
You can cut a mango into cubes after you peel it, but you can also cube a mango without having to remove its skin at all. Here’s an easy way to get your mango cubed without the mess!
Mango flesh can be very slippery, so be extra careful when cutting up the fruit. It helps to keep a few paper towels nearby to wipe your hands as you work.
Slice the mango in half with a chef’s knife.
Mangoes have a large, flat, oval-shaped pit. Slice along one flat side, close to the pit. Turn the mango to the other side and make carefully make another slice along the other side of the pit. The pit will have a ring of flesh and skin still attached. (Enjoy this leftover part yourself!)
Use a paring knife to make a series of diagonal cuts across one of the mango halves, being careful not to cut through the skin.
Space the cuts about ½ to ¾ of an inch, depending on your preference.
On the same mango half, make a series of horizontal cuts, going from the stem end to the tip.
Try not to cut the skin. You should see diamond-shaped pieces of fruit.
Turn the mango-half inside out.
Use your fingers to push the center of the skin-side of the mango. You want to make the diced cubes stand out from the skin (kind of looks like a porcupine or hedgehog!).
At this point, you can just place the mango on a plate and serve.
Cut the cubes off, away from the skin.
The skin holds the cubes in place so that you can easily remove them.
Repeat Steps 2 through 5 with the other half of the mango.
Mangoes are ripe if they give slightly to pressure and have a fragrant aroma. You can further the ripening process by placing the mangoes in a paper bag. Close up the bag and leave it on your counter. Check the fruit every few days to check the ripeness.
