Power-Management Features of Your Fire Tablet

By Nancy C. Muir

With the latest generation of Fire tablets comes a Power Management item in the Settings screen. The first two settings deal with when SmartSuspend kicks in to turn off your network connection.

Two other settings are available in the Power Management settings screen: Display Brightness (a brighter display drains your battery faster) and Wireless settings. You can access both of these through Quick Settings when you first swipe down from the top of your screen.

SmartSuspend is a new power-management feature. SmartSuspend senses when your tablet hasn’t been used for a bit and disconnects from your network. Because, when you’re connected to a network, data may update and download to your device, disconnecting saves battery life.

The first SmartSuspend setting simply turns the feature on or off. With it turned on, the Schedule Wi-Fi Suspend setting becomes available. This setting allows you to schedule suspend times, instead of them happening automatically.

Tap Schedule Wi-Fi Suspend to see the screen shown here.

Use the Duration From/To sliders to set up a time of day for SmartSuspend to kick in. You can also use the Repeat settings beneath the sliders to have the suspend repeat every day, or only on weekdays or weekends.

For example, if you sleep late on weekends and you don’t want your kids accessing your network from your tablet till 10 a.m., you can set up a repeating suspend on weekends from 5 a.m. till 10 a.m.

When you’ve finished making settings, tap Set Time to save them.
