How to Set Up Your Kindle Fire HD

By Nancy C. Muir

When you turn Kindle Fire HD on for the first time, you see a series of screens that help you set up and register the device. Don’t worry: There aren’t many questions, and you know all the answers.

Connect to a Wi-Fi network. You need this connection to register your device (if Amazon hasn’t already pre-registered your device to your account). Follow these steps to register and set up your Kindle Fire HD:

1In the Connect to a Network list, tap an available network.

Kindle Fire HD connects to the network (you may need to enter a password and then tap Connect to access an available network).

The Register Your Kindle screen appears.

2Enter your Amazon account information, e-mail address, and a password in the appropriate fields, and then skip to Step 5; if you don’t have an Amazon account, see Step 3.

You can choose to deselect the Show Password check box so that your password doesn’t appear on your screen as you type it. This protects your password from prying eyes.

3If you don’t have an Amazon account, click the New to Amazon? Create Account link.

This link takes you to the Create an Amazon Account screen, with fields for entering your name, e-mail address, and password (which you have to retype to confirm).

4Enter this information.

Then tap Continue.

5Tap the By Registering, You Agree to All of the Terms Found Here link.

That is, of course, if you want to read the terms of registration.

6When you finish reading the terms, tap the Close button to return to the registration screen.

To complete the registration with an existing or new account, tap the Register button.

7Tap to select a time zone from the list provided and then tap Continue.

For countries other than the United States, tap More and choose from the provided list. After you select from the list, tap the Back button in the bottom-left corner to return to the Time Zone screen.

8A final screen appears asking you to confirm your account. Tap Continue.

There’s also a link labeled Not <Your Name>? If, for some reason, you aren’t you (for example, you may have entered your account information incorrectly), tap the Not <Your Name> link to change your account information and then return to this screen.

The next screen, labeled Connect Social Networks, shows what social networks, if any, you’re connected to.

9(Optional) If there are accounts here labeled, for example, Connect Your Twitter Account, tap them to connect.

These connections are a result of connections you may have to your Amazon account.

10To proceed, tap Get Started Now.

At this point you see the first of several screens that acquaint you with the features of Kindle Fire HD and how to use some of the major ones. Tap the Next button on the middle-right side of these screens to proceed through the brief tutorial.

At the end of the series, tap the Close button to go to the Kindle Fire HD Home screen. If you need more help at any time, you can refer to the User’s Guide in the Kindle Fire HD Docs library.
