How to Learn Proper Pronunciation for Medical Coding and Billing Terms

It’s no secret that many of the words you encounter in the medical billing and coding world don’t exactly roll off the tongue (consider acetabulum or olecranon!), and mispronouncing these terms can be an embarrassment. Worse, people — like hiring managers — may take your mispronunciations to mean that you don’t know the subject matter. Learning the correct pronunciation of medical terminology gives you credibility.

Although a knowledgeable instructor can educate you about correct pronunciation, another alternative is the interactive CD that some textbook publishers provide with their printed materials. These discs are a great way to learn correct pronunciation of medical terminology because you can work with it at your leisure.

Some interactive CDs phonetically pronounce the word parts and then put the word together; these are wonderful learning tools.

Several solid anatomy and physiology resources are available for billing and coding students, many of which offer online access or interactive CDs. Here are some of the best options:

  • Gray’s Anatomy for Students: With STUDENT CONSULT Online Access, by Richard L. Drake, A. Wayne Vogl, and Adam W.M. Mitchell: This book sets the standard for medical reference materials. It includes illustrations that are a huge asset to any classroom anatomy lesson. Purchasing the book gives you access to the online version of the book, which includes interactive exercises.

  • Anatomy and Physiology Revealed Version 2.0 CD, by the University of Toledo: An interactive CD that uses cadaver photos, this resource lets you study the body by peeling away layers to view underlying structures. It also has audio pronunciations and quizzes.

  • Atlas of Human Anatomy: With Student Consult Access, by Frank H. Netter, MD. This book uses detailed illustrations to assist you with both vocabulary and anatomy. It also includes an online access pin number, which offers additional learning resources.
