Managing Facebook News Feed Subscriptions

By Carolyn Abram

The recent addition of Facebook Subscriptions means you can receive public posts from your favorite blogger or pundit in your News Feed without the hassle of mutual friendship or Liking their Page. Getting started with subscriptions is simple.

Just navigate to a user’s timeline and click the Subscribe button that appears in their info section (directly beneath the cover photo). Additionally, you may see recommendations from Facebook in the People to Subscribe To section on the right column of your Home page.

To save you from the potentially time-consuming task of subscribing to your friends one by one, you’re automatically subscribed to Most Updates from all of your friends.

To change your subscription settings for an individual friend or user, complete the following steps:

  1. Go to your friend’s timeline.

  2. Click the Subscribe button at the top right of the page.

  3. From the menu that appears, control which updates you want to receive from this friend by clicking the relevant options.

A check mark to the left of that option means you are currently subscribed. The figure above shows the Subscribe menu in all its glory.

To adjust more than one subscription at a time, head over to the Manage Subscriptions page. There are a few ways to access this page, but you can start by clicking the Subscriptions box from the Info section of your timeline. The Manage Subscriptions page lets you to view subscriptions by Friend Subscriptions or Public Subscriptions. Click the Subscribe button to the right of the names in either list to open the Subscribe menu.

When choosing which of your friends to subscribe to along with the level of subscription, it’s worth keeping in mind that the people you interact with, whether through messaging, commenting, or writing on each other’s timelines, are the people you tend to care about. The same status can feel very different coming from different people, so keeping Facebook about the people you actually want to hear from is pretty useful.

You have the option of adding a Subscribe button to your own timeline to enable non-friends to receive your public updates in their News Feeds. Enable subscriptions by following these steps:

  1. Go to your timeline and click Subscriptions on the left menu, directly below your timeline picture.

  2. A blue tab appears at the top of your timeline. Click Allow Subscribers.

  3. From the Edit Subscriber Settings pop-up window, choose who can comment on your posts and how you’re notified about new subscribers.

  4. Click OK.

You do not need to share anything you don’t feel comfortable sharing. Allowing subscribers is completely optional. If you allow subscribers, only posts you set to Public appear in your subscribers’ News Feeds.
