How to Perform the Yoga Triangle Posture - dummies

By Georg Feuerstein, Larry Payne

The triangle posture is a common standing yoga pose. It stretches your legs and your spine, and allows your chest to expand so you can breathe more deeply. Click here to watch a video that walks you through the triangle posture.

Here are the steps to the triangle pose:

  1. Stand with your feet about 3 feet apart, exhale, and step out to the right about 3 to 3-½ feet with your right foot.

  2. Turn your right foot out 90 degrees and your left foot out 45 degrees.

  3. Face forward and, as you inhale, raise your arms out to the sides parallel to your shoulders so they form a T with the torso.

  4. As you exhale, reach your right hand down to your right shin as close to the ankle as is comfortable for you and then lift your left arm up.

  5. Soften your left arm and look up at your left hand.

  6. Repeat Steps 3 through 5 three times and then stay in Step 5 for six to eight breaths.

Repeat the same sequence on the left side.
