How to Unsubscribe from Google Groups

By James T. Cains

Sometimes, when you join a group, you may find that it’s not what you thought it would be. Or perhaps you’re not interested in the topic any longer. In any case, unsubscribing from a group is pretty easy. Here’s how:

  1. Log in to Google Groups and click My Groups in the left navigation. You see the list of your groups (see Figure 1).

  2. Click the Leave This Group button on the right.

After a few seconds, you see that the Leave This Group button changes to Left Group. When you refresh your My Groups page, that group disappears from your list.

If you change your mind and want to rejoin the group, you have to search for the group again and click the Join Group button. For a restricted or private group, you have to go through the same process you went through to join the group; that is, you have to apply for membership or contact the owner, and make your case for rejoining the group. Keep that in mind when you’re unsubscribing to a restricted or private group; restricted or private group owners may not take kindly to having to add you back to the group.
