How to Manage Links in Dropbox

By James T. Cains

Whenever you send links to your Dropbox files and folders, those links appear in the Links area so that you can manage them. To view a list of the links you’ve sent, click Links in the left navigation of your Dropbox (see Figure 1).

Here’s what you can do when managing your links:

  • View the linked files and folders: Click the link for each item to either view the folder or preview the file in Dropbox’s document viewer.

  • Delete a link: Click the X to the far right of each item to delete the link. This removes any access you’ve given to others to the file or folder.

  • Send the link to others: Click on the gear icon to send a link to the file or folder to others. This is the same as sending a link in other areas of Dropbox, so you should already know how to do this.

  • View recently visited links: From the drop-down menu at the top right, choose Recently Visited to see the links that you’ve visited. Note that this doesn’t show clicks and views of your own links, as the name might imply.

As Dropbox warns you, the links you create to any file or folder can be viewed by any- and everyone who might get their fingers on the URL. Plus, they don’t need a Dropbox account to view them. So be careful with what you share. If you’re worried about security, you can upgrade to Dropbox Pro (about $10 per month) or Dropbox for Business ($15 per month) to get password protection and better permissions management.
