Using Predictive Text to Type Quickly on Your Android Phone

By Dan Gookin

As you type on your Android phone, you may see a selection of word suggestions just above the onscreen keyboard. That’s the predictive-text feature in action. You can use this feature to greatly accelerate your typing: As you type, tap a word suggestion atop the onscreen keyboard. That word is inserted into the text.

If the desired word doesn’t appear, continue typing: The predictive-text feature makes suggestions based on what you’ve typed so far.

  • On some phones, you may see one of the predictive-text words shown in bold. If so, tap the Space key to insert that word.
  • If three dots appear beneath a predictive-text word, long-press that word to view other word choices.
  • The predictive-text feature is part of the Google Keyboard.
