How to Add an App to the Favorites Tray on Your Android Phone

By Dan Gookin

The line of launchers at the bottom of the Home screen on your Android phone is called the favorites tray. It includes the Apps icon, as well as other launchers you place there, such as the Phone or Dialer launcher, or any app you use most often. The favorites tray launchers appear at the bottom of every Home screen page.

Launchers are added to the favorites tray in one of two ways:

  • Drag a launcher off the favorites tray, either to the Home screen or to the Remove or Delete icon. You can then add another launcher to replace the one you removed.

  • Drag a launcher from the Home screen to the favorites tray, in which case any existing launcher swaps places with the one already there.

Of these two methods, the second one may not work on all phones. In fact, the second method may create a folder in the favorites tray, which is probably not what you want.

You can also create and use Home screen folders, which can also dwell on the favorites tray.

The best icons to place on the Home screen are those that show updates, such as new messages. These icons are also ideal to place in the favorites tray.
