Make NFC Part of the Internet of Things (IoT)

By Robert R. Sabella

Using Near Field Communication (NFC) with the Internet of Things (IoT) lets you perform an incredible array of interesting tasks. The IoT defines a set of technologies that relies on the Internet to perform interesting tasks. For example, your security system probably connects to the Internet, as does your car. IoT is at the convergence of mobility, cloud connectivity, cloud computing, and big data.

People rely on the cloud to perform all sorts of important tasks, and big data is a component of all the features that people like about shopping online (such as getting recommendations of other products to buy). For example, with NFC, you can create:

  • Smart railways
  • Agricultural tracking systems
  • NFC medical records
  • Interactive museums
  • NFC-enabled voting systems

What all these diverse technologies have in common is proximity ID technologies. When merged with cloud-based applications, proximity ID technologies enable complete interaction between the physical and digital worlds.
