How to Customize Your Business’s Facebook Page

Once you have your Facebook Business Page created, you will want to add some details to make it stand out to your fans. Consider customizing with these tips in mind.

How to upload your profile photo

Your first step in creating a new Page is to upload a profile photo. A good way to start making your Page unique is to upload your company logo or a photo of your product. This picture represents your business on Facebook, so make it a good one. If you’re a services company, you can have photos of happy people using your service.

Facebook does give you an option to import an image from your website, but you should upload a square picture that’s specifically designed for your Facebook Page.

You can upload photos in JPG, GIF, or PNG formats only. Pictures are resized to 170 pixels wide and 170 pixels high.

To upload the first picture for your Page, follow these steps:

  1. Click the Upload from Computer link on the Step 1 tab.

  2. Browse to the picture you’re looking for and then click the Open button to start the upload process.

    Your profile picture appears as soon as the upload process has finished.


You can also import a photo directly from your website. To do this, just click the Import from website link, enter your website URL in the pop-up window, and then click the Import button.

Facebook automatically creates a thumbnail version of your profile picture. It will be seen all over Facebook, so you want it to look its best.

How to invite people to like your Page

As soon as you click the Save Info button, Facebook automatically prompts you to like your Page, post an update, and promote your Page to your e-mail list and your Facebook friends.

Because your Page really isn’t ready for prime time yet, consider skipping this step. After you add a cover image, add relevant third-party applications, and configure your Timeline settings, you’ll be ready to promote your Page.

How to add a cover photo to your Facebook Page

The most powerful way to engage Facebook users is with images. Facebook Pages include the ability to upload a cover photo that appears at the very top of your Facebook Page. (Note that the dimensions for the image should be 851 pixels by 315 pixels.)

Think of your cover image as the primary way to create a powerful first impression when someone visits your Page. It can also be used as another tool to engage your most passionate fans. For example, Coca-Cola encourages fans to submit their photos, which the company uses in its cover images.

To upload a cover image, click the “Add a Cover” button on the right-hand side of your Page and either upload a photo (851 pixels by 315 pixels), or select an image from a photo album.

Facebook covers cannot be comprised of more than 20% text.


How to edit your Facebook Page’s thumbnail

When you first create your Page, a thumbnail version of your profile picture is created automatically. This thumbnail image is important: It will be seen all over Facebook, so you want it to look its best. However, because the image is created automatically, your image won’t always get placed correctly in the thumbnail. You can scale your image so that it fits better within a thumbnail with these steps:

  1. Mouse over your profile picture and click the Edit Profile Picture link.

  2. From the drop-down menu, click the Edit Thumbnail button.

  3. In the pop-up window, drag or scale the thumbnail image to your liking.

  4. When you have your thumbnail positioned to your liking, click Save.


Limit access to your Page until launch

Before you go live with your Page, you might want to consider limiting the access to only admins until you’re ready to launch your Page.

You do this by clicking the Edit Page link from the Edit Page drop-down menu at the top of your Page, then clicking the Edit Settings link. Setting your Facebook Page to Unpublished hides it from all users, including your customers and prospects.

Only the administrators of the Page can view the Page while it’s unpublished. Your Page won’t be visible to users until you change this setting back to Published.
